English Classes
The English Department provides a four-year sequence of courses designed to develop students' reading, writing, speaking, listening, and critical thinking skills while preparing them for college, careers, and civic life. Through the study of literature and informational texts, students learn to analyze ideas, communicate effectively, and support their thinking with evidence.
English 9 and 10
Students in grades 9 and 10 enroll in English 9 and English 10, where they develop and strengthen skills in reading comprehension, literary analysis, vocabulary, and academic writing through the study of increasingly complex literary and informational texts. Students seeking a more rigorous experience may enroll in Pre-AP English 1 or Pre-AP English 2, accelerated courses designed to build advanced reading, analytical writing, and critical thinking skills in preparation for future Advanced Placement coursework.
English 11
Students in grade 11 enroll in English 11 or Advanced Placement English Language and Composition. English 11 emphasizes research and evidence-based writing while developing students’ ability to analyze texts and construct clear, well-supported arguments. AP English Language and Composition provides students with a rigorous college-level experience focused on rhetorical analysis and argument. Students may sit for the AP examination and potentially earn college credit.
English 12
Students in grade 12 enroll in English 12, where they refine analytical and reflective writing skills through the close reading of complex literary works. Students seeking a more rigorous experience may enroll in Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition, a college-level course focused on literary analysis; students may sit for the AP examination to potentially earn college credit. Seniors may also enroll in Public Speaking, a college-preparatory course that develops effective speaking and listening skills through formal speeches, outlines, multimedia presentations, and critical discussion of challenging texts, with the opportunity to earn dual enrollment credit through Butte College.
The English Language Development program supports multilingual learners in developing reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills across all levels of English proficiency. Courses include ELD Beginning Reading for foundational literacy, ELA Transitions for students nearing proficiency, ELD Accel 1 for accelerated language development, and ELD Advanced Grammar for mastery of sentence structure, grammar, and academic vocabulary.
All students are required to earn 40 English credits (8 semesters) to graduate. Instruction is aligned with the California Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts, and Advanced Placement courses align with College Board Course and Exam Descriptions.
